Is preparation needed before an EEG recording?

Yes, preparation is required before an EEG recording. The patient must be prepared, the EEG cap must be set up correctly, and signal quality must be verified before recording begins.

Preparing the Patient

Before starting an EEG recording, the patient should be prepared to support reliable data acquisition.

  • The patient should be seated comfortably.
  • The patient should be instructed to remain relaxed and minimize movement during the recording.
  • The patient should relax the face, jaw, neck, and shoulders to help reduce muscle-related artifacts.

EEG Cap Preparation

Proper preparation of the EEG cap is essential before recording begins.

  • Ensure all adapter cables are connected to the correct electrode positions on the EEG cap.
  • Moisten the sponge inserts with 0.9% saline solution.
  • Position the EEG cap correctly and comfortably on the patient's head.
  • Attach the reference and ground electrodes securely to the ear lobes.
  • Insert and secure all sponge holders in the cap.

Signal Quality Check

Before starting the recording, signal quality should be reviewed in the SAM software.

  • Review signal quality for all channels.
  • Confirm that all channels show acceptable and stable signal quality.
  • If signal quality is not stable, address the issue before proceeding with the recording.

Notes

  • Patient preparation, EEG cap setup, and signal quality verification should be completed before recording begins.
  • EEG acquisition includes both eyes-open and eyes-closed recording conditions.
  • Recording should only begin once signal quality is stable.
