What Objects Should Be Removed Before a TMS Session?
Before a TMS session begins, patients should remove metallic and electronic objects from the head and neck area. These items may interfere with the magnetic field or create safety risks during treatment.
Objects That Should Be Removed
Patients should remove the following items before treatment:
- Jewelry, including earrings, necklaces, and piercings
- Hair clips, hairpins, and barrettes
- Glasses or sunglasses
- Hearing aids
- Removable dental appliances
- Hats, headbands, and other headwear
- Electronic devices near the treatment area
Why Is This Important?
TMS uses a strong magnetic field to stimulate targeted areas of the brain. Metallic objects located near the stimulation coil may interfere with treatment delivery and should be removed whenever possible.
Before Starting Treatment
Before each session:
- Confirm the patient has removed all removable metallic objects from the head and neck area.
- Verify the patient is comfortably seated.
- Ensure the coil can be positioned correctly.
- Review any safety concerns before beginning stimulation.
Important Note
Patients with implanted medical devices, metallic implants, or other contraindications should be evaluated according to your clinic's TMS safety procedures before treatment is performed.
